As m4stermel pointed out to me, there's been another free content patch, which one can view by doing with the clicking here, and it adds some nice features to the game, and 2 new units.

First, the Beasts Summoner got replaced with a new unit, the Hunter. Instead of a squid summoning beasty's to do the hunting for you, you get a bat like creature that can do glide attacks, poison, self heal and the sentry (instead of an owl it's a bat)

I think it's rather big of S2 to ditch the Summoner, which really wasn't making the grade. It was a hard unit to use, the critters where easily avoidable, and a scout and savage could take him out easily. No one played the Summoner, perfering the shapeshifter instead.

Also, there's a new Speacial unit called Malkien. You obtain him by purchasing persist ant items, items that stay in your inventory even after you die (but only exist per match). Each persistent item gives a nice buff, and if you buy them all (pretty expensive I hear) and cash in 10 souls you can play as the Malkien character (one per team) who has some nice party buff's and weapon modes.

There's also three more maps, which more maps is always a good thing. When the game was released... there where 2 I think.

Also, Combat got a addition in the form of dodging. You can dodge right/left/or back, which makes things very very interesting I would think in both Melee and Ranged combat.

There's also some nifty items you can buy besides the persistent Mailken ones, such as a res item, recall item, a sheild based on your manna, and what have you

Ya know, seeing this post reminds me of how much I absolutely don't care about Savage 2...kind of sad after my slavish devotion to the first game.

Hrm...

Well hopefully it will get some play time this next upcoming DLNW, with all the changes it's pretty darn interesting, for me at least.

So do you still play Savage 1 then? If there was just a lot of little things you didn't quite like about Savage 2 you should give it a try again. They've improved the gameplay a lot, making the combat smoother and faster as well as improving the balance and increasing strategy options. If it was some fundamental problem you had with it then I guess there's not much you can do.

I still play Savage 2 every now and then and find it fun and entertaining. But I can't play it online for hours on end, it gets old too fast. At a LAN it's a different story.

indeed, you can't hear people cry about playing savage 2 online nearly as well as at a LAN :)

I will probably give this a shot some time as well, to see the differences.

I haven't touched Savage in months, but then I've been distracted with another old obsession lately, Oblivion. I played Savage 2, and what I don't like is that it feels to me like the strategy options got severely neutered.

I can't pick my own loadout of units and weapons but must conform to their class system. Melee feels like a random brawl rather than a strategic battle of the minds. Finally the buildings conform to the class system in that you just build a structure and you have everything. I rather liked the progression of units from basic to advanced with the aforementioned freedom to spec your loadout to whatever suits your play style.

I think the best way to put it is I feel a great loss of freedom in the game.

Additionally, I have played with Malkien and that guy is the most arrogant SOB I've ever played with. Might even call the guy a troll.

Well I wont argue with that, that is indeed the changes to the game. Much like CoD4, or Enemy Territories, or even Team Fortress, the weapons/skills are predefined per the class.

Sure you have items you can get for your loadout, and they help a lot, but a Pred's a Pred, and a Scout's a Scout.

Melee is much improved though. Some have even claimed it's more fluid and makes more sense then just random clickage. And you can dodge, I always like that. They dodge you shoot em, or you shoot and doge people like some kind of shooting dodging ninja.

The Tec Tree is very neutered and isn't really the point anymore. It's more about strategic towers, controlling the map with properly placed gold mines, and lots and lots of commander buffs/debuffs.

It is a different game, but BR will never be convinced.

Shouldn't the fact that the Savage fan-boy is no longer interested tell him its a different game?

They are welcome to change the game, I just feel that Savage One better captured the RTSS concept than its successor did. I would perhaps enjoy S2 if I had never tasted the joy of S1, but after drinking the Pepsi of S1, S2 tastes like diet.

Man that was an awesome show! :D

Yeah, this is definitely true. Savage 2 has seemed to turn into more of a FPS/Action game, which still makes for a good game.

I would agree with zible though that the combat is a lot more skillful and dynamic than in Savage1. It's a lot more of "...a strategic battle of the minds" in my opinion. But that could just be that I never mastered combat in its predecessor.

Also, like zible mentioned the role of a commander is taken away. They're really only good for buffs/debuffs which only apply a slight advantage to your team. I've played many games in Savage 2 where our team never even had a commander!

But overall it's a really good game. And I would agree that people that didn't like Savage 1 should give Savage 2 a try. It's different.

m4stermel agrees with me so much, cause I control his mind, and his bank account. I'm like a bald one eyed evil Genius or something.
