You read the reviews about those comps from Dell and everyone responds the same,

Either they wipe it and put on XP, or they get the box up to 2 gigs of memory and then have no problems.

Nobody keeps it as is.

thats the one of the problems with getting computer from places like dell. That comercial for PC vs Macs nailed it when PC come out and he's a ballooned up from trial software and crap. I can't believe the amount of crap that came on my lap top from dell. I formatted that sucker 2.5 seconds after I got it freed like 20 gigs and kept a bunch of stuff from being loaded in the background that I didn't want or need.

True, but those guys have some of the better deals on Laptops. It's hard to get a good quality laptop for cheap from someone else.

The trick for when I got Liz's is to compare the price of upgrading on their site, to upgrading on my own.

Needless to say with Dell, get the best proc as they really do offer a good deal, but get the least amount of memory and HDD, as it is way cheaper to then just replace it. (150 for the upgrade to 2 gigs of mem, 99 on new egg for 2 gigs of Ram... it's a no brainer)

They do still sell with XP on them, hell they even sell with Suse or Ubuntu on them, you just have to call and tell them that is what you wnat. Their website seems to be fairly limited about OS choices.

Am i the only one that ALWAYS reformats/reinstalls the OS after receiving it from a vender?

The only exception has been my Alienware laptop. It ran extremely well out of the factory, but even still i still got a performance boost by reinstalling.

'Course you won't be able to buy anything pre-assembled without Vista now. Then again, beyond laptops, I doubt anyone that comes to the Dead Lands actually purchases their machines. I would hope everyone builds from scratch.

I haven't bought a machine for probably 10 years...building a PC has got to be one of the simplest things on the planet, figureing out what parts to get thats a little tougher but if you can read you can figure it out. Puting the parts together though I'd bet a drunk monkey could do.

You'd be suprised, to the uninitiated, putting together a comp is a complex and mysterious task that involves black Vodoo and arcane incantations.

You probably feel that way because you can work on cars as well. Cause thats exactly how I feel about working on cars. Black magic and dark powers.

From the little I have seen with vista I am not impressed. My friend but Vista on his work laptop and two weeks later took it off because he just could not work with it because of how different it was.

I am a total Apple fanboy and I love all thing Mac. I have had Apple computers since 1998 and I absolutely love them. I still use Windows at work and it is not to bad. I actually don't mind Windows XP. I guess though eventually we will all be using Vista someday.

About building you computer from scratch, I think I would if I had a PC. I have build 3 or 4 computers from scratch for other people.

I kinda like the Apple computer model. You buy a computer that is guaranteed to work with all the parts inside. If you get an iMac with bluetooth keyboard and mouse then you just plug in power and are ready to go everything you need just one cord.

Then after 2 years or so you sell your computer for about half of what you paid for it and buy a new one that is better in everywway for only a few hundred dollars more.

PC computers have absolutely no resell value. You just throw the old one away or give it to a kid. Or change out one part at a time until the parts you have don't work and then you upgrade that part.
